Mum and dad's taxi service is great - until they're busy when you have somewhere extremely important to be. That's when you know it's time to pass your test!

For some people, learning to drive comes as naturally as riding a bike. For the rest of us, it's a bit of a learning curve. However, we've all been there and know the feeling, so to help allay your fears we've put together some great learning to drive tips.

Book that first lesson

When you're learning to drive, it's important to get an instructor that works with both you and your budget. Don't just head straight to the main driving schools; ask friends and family to see if there's a local instructor who they can recommend. These instructors tend to be cheaper too, so they're a good bet.

Patience is a virtue

Just because Gemma down the road passed her test within a couple of months doesn't mean that you will too. Everyone learns at different rates, and driving isn't a skill that comes easily to all! Just take your time, be patient, and know that you'll get there one day.

Practice makes perfect

Nobody gets good at anything without a lot of practice. This is where generous friends and family members come in - you can get insured on their car and practice driving between lessons with their guidance (so long as they're over 21 and have hel a full licence for 3 years).

Invest in a sat nav

From 4th December 2018, the driving test will be updated to include spending around 20 minutes being guided by a sat nav. Research has shown that more than half of Britain's drivers now use a sat nav, and making it part of the exam will mean drivers are better prepared for the reality of life on the road. This doesn't mean you have to buy a sat nav, of course - your instructor will have one. However, if you're insured as a learner driver on someone else's car, having as much practise with a sat nav as possible can only be a good thing!

Take your theory test

Before you take your practical, you need to pass your theory test. When you pass, it's valid for 2 years, meaning you have to pass your practical before it runs out. This test consists of multiple choice questions and hazard perception - now's the time to hit those books!
